Lephalale SAPS reports that on Friday Crime Intelligence Division(CID) was tipped off about firearms abandoned under a culvert (culvert is a structure that allows water to flow under a road that is usually called col-bet) on R510 in Stockpoort.

Police say by the look of things the firearms have been there for a very long time.
Lephalale SAPS Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena says when they traced two of the firearms’ identity, they were linked to ownership by an old man who has since died and an elderly woman born in 1936 while the other four have had their numbers wiped out.

He says the firearms have never been reported stolen.
Some of the firearms and live ammunition have been covered by termite soil and rust with invisible numbers, making it difficult to trace their owners.

The firearms are 2 short-gun rifles,1revolver,1 short gun revolver and two hunting rifles, as well as 122 rifle ammunition, 33 short gun revolver live ammunition and 231 pistol live ammunition.
